PURPOSE:To obtain a composition containing solanesol useful as a synthetic intermediate of coenzyme Q, side-chain component of vitamin K2, etc., easily, as a residue obtained by extracting saponified mixture of tobacco extract with a specific solvent. CONSTITUTION:Tobacco extract is saponified in an aqueous solution of caustic potash, etc., and the reaction mixture is extracted with hydrous alcohol (e.g. methanol containing 10% of water). The saponified compounds are removed as the hydrous alcohol soluble materials, and the residue is recovered as unsaponifiable component. The residue contains essentially the whole of the unsaponifiable solanesol in high concentration. The process does not necessitate a highly flammable organic solvent, and remarkably reduces the number of steps. |
