The press includes a mixer, which is followed by a worm press; and the mixer housing is provided with an inlet pipe and control valve for steam. The control valve admitting the steam is adjusted according to the temp. of the ceramic mass just upstream of the mouth of the press. Press pref. contains knives which prevent the ceramic mass from rotating together with the worm; and the temp. sensor is pref. located on one knife and connected to a three-step controller adjusting the steam control valve. The addn. of steam to the mixer improves the plasticity of the ceramic mass; and the invention provides accurate control of the moisture content in the extrudate, eliminating human adjustment which is often incorrect.
