NEW MATERIAL:An acetal of 4-substituted nonanal of formula I (R is alkyl or aralkyl; R1 is lower alkyl, or two R1s together form a lower alkylene). EXAMPLE:4-Propoxynonanal diethylacetal. USE:Useful in the field of perfumery as a perfume, a perfume imparting agent, and a perfume modifier, having fruity and green fresh unique perfume with green herbal tone and balsamic sweetness. It is also useful as a synthetic intermediate of other perfumery. The perfume of the compound lasts long. PROCESS:The compound of formula I is prepared by reacting a 4-substituted nonanal of formula II with an alcohol of formula R1'OH (R1' is lower alkyl or hydroxyalkyl) in the presence of an acid such as hydrochloric acid phosphoric acid at about 20-150 deg.C, pref. about 50-100 deg.C. |
