The flywheel has a base section (1) which is circular with a circular recess in the centre of one side and an annular recess on the periphery of the other. The base section is of lightweight material. The annular recess is filled with a high density material (2) which provides the necessary moment of inertia. This material can be shrunk or welded to the base section. The circular recess is filled with a hard wearing material to provide a good bearing surface. It can be of a suitably heat treated alloy held in the recess by shrinkage or welding.
