The invention facilitates the use of completely or substantially non-exothermically decomposing hydrocarbons, in particular of benzene, for producing carbon blacks of the same quality as acetylene blacks. This is achieved by introducing the gaseous or atomised hydrocarbon into an air and/or nitrogen plasma. The invention further relates to apparatus for carrying out the process and to the carbon black obtained.
