A cleaning or damping device for the cylinders of rotary offset printing machines comprises a housing which is less wide than the axial length of the cylinders, a mounting means in the housing for a wiper band and means for attaching and detaching the device from the printing machine so that when the wiper band is in contact with a cylinder the device can be moved axially of the cylinder. Fig. 2 illustrates a device according to the invention in place on either the stencil cylinder 2 or the offset cylinder 3 of a duplicating machine. This machine is fitted with guide-bars 4 and 5, the bars being symmetrically placed axially of the cylinders which have the same diameter, bar 5 engaging a recess 6b in the housing 6 of the cleaning device, and bar 4 interacting with lug 6c preventing the device from falling into recess 3b in cylinder 3. The housing 6 can therefore pivot on these support means in a radial direction with respect to the cylinder and can slide axially across the cylinder, the width of the housing preferably being such that it can be grasped by hand (Fig. 1, not shown). As illustrated in Fig. 3, a winding spool 7 is attached to a milled rotary knob 8# and carries a wiper band 8 made of absorbent fabric or paper; a supply roll 10 is inserted in the housing 6 and its leading end is attached to the spool 7, a cover 9 is anchored to the housing 6 and the wiper band is kept under tension by means of a blade spring 13 and a roller 11 which acts as a brake. Between the roller 11 and the winding spool 7 are placed guide lugs 6g, (6h) and 6i which prevent the wiper band from deviating in a lateral direction as a result of the lateral wiping movement across a cylinder; a support 14 of resilient material, e.g. rubber or felt, is fixed behind the wiper band 8 in the section 6f of the housing, the curvature of which corresponds to the curvature of the printing machine cylinder. The means by which the wiper band is charged with liquid is also shown in Fig. 3; a resilient absorbent element 18, e.g. a block of foam or felt stands in the cleaning or damping agent 19 contained in a tray 16, the housing 6 being placed or pressed on top of element 18. The well cover 17 preferably contains a filling aperture 17a and side walls 17b and 17c confine the wiper band 8 and the side walls of the housing 6 thus substantially sealing the device and preventing evaporation of the cleaning or damping agent 19. When the device is in use, it is moved sideways on the machine cylinder until the whole of the cylinder has been in contact with the wiper band; when a section of the band becomes soiled, it is advanced by means of knob 8b until an unused section lies over the support 14. This section is then moistened using the tray 16. |
