A plastics rope on a geared motor (20) shortens at contact points (21, 15) in the hoist movement off winch drums (21) and motor via pulleys (23, 25) and has an excessive descent speed brake (28). The base (15) synchroniser is a lazy tongs (16, 17, 18) with a base upright (22) carrying the pulley set. Load relief with the linkage closed is provided by a compression spring between the base and bottom frame whose spring path equals the initial lift of the base (15). Load relief can aso be provided by a toggle lever with apex fitted pulleys and with the downward arm hinged to the linkage rod (16).
