Two-stage dry quenching of coke - using coke-oven gas and then heat-transfer gas

Process and appts. for utilising the sensible heat of coke discharged from a coke oven are claimed. The process comprises dry quenching the coke in 2 stages, the 1st using raw coke-oven gas and the 2nd using a heat-transfer gas (e.g. flue gas from the coke oven and/or an inert gas from an external source, such as blast-furnace gas). The process provides 100% utilisation of available heat, the high-temp. heat serving to purify the coke-oven gas and the low-temp. heat being transferred to the heat-transfer gas, e.g. for generating steam or preheating and/or drying the coal feed.
