A separator for a wet or dry alkaline cell battery is made from a flexible fabric of oriented thermoplastic fibres by winding a strip of fabric into a cylindrical sleeve with a helical or longitudinal seam and using heat shrinkage to contract one rim of the sleeve over the borders of a base disc of or coated with a thermoplastic material and located within the cylinder and a short distance from its base. Pref. the constituent(s) of the sleeve and the base disc are resistant to alkalis. Opt. the base disc is solid plastic injection moulding. Use of welded seams is quicker than assembly by stitching and avoids introduction of additional materials for adhesive bonded seams which might interfere with the electrolytic ions of the cell.
