The mechanism is intended for loading piece goods in layers on to pallets. It comprises a station (1) where layers are placed in readiness, a pallet loading station (2), and a carriage (3) with load receiving platform (4). The carriage is movable to and fro (10) between the stations. The platform itself is movable relative to the carriage in the direction (10) of carriage m movement and/or right angles (11). The platform may have a fixed support portion (5) and a portion (6) which covers at least half the platform area and is transversely movable (11).
