[Also in Divisions H1, H2, and H3] In stud welding apparatus in which the stud is lifted and an arc is struck for a duration controlled by a timer, the timer includes a unijunction transistor which controls a switch to disconnect the welding current and thrust the stud against the work. After the welding gun 20 and the stud 26 have been pressed against the work 28, operation of a trigger switch 38 connects a D.C. supply 40 through a rectifier 58 to the timer 24 and energizes relays 42, 36 in turn to strike a pilot arc via a resistance 52, operates a solenoid 32 to lift the stud 26 and shunts the trigger switch 38. After a slight delay relay 54 applies the full welding current. The output of the rectifier 58 voltage regulated by a diode 60 is fed in parallel to a uni-junction transistor 68 in a voltage divider 76, 77 and to a network of resistors 62, 64 and a condenser 66. After a time, partly dependent on ambient temperature since the relative currents in the transistor 68 vary with temperature, the voltage across condenser 66 reaches a value such that a sudden increased current flows through the transistor 68 from the emitter 74 to base terminal 70. The resulting pulse from resistor 76 fires a silicon-controlled rectifier 78 to actuate relay 80. The welding current is disconnected and the stud 26 is forced by a spring 34 into welding engagement with the work 28. The rectifier 78 continues to conduct until the timer is disconnected to prevent re-cycling.
