The water heating system combined with an open fireplace uses a hollow baseplate (1) below the combustion zone combined with a set of hollow fire dogs (2) to circulate the water as it is being heated. The baseplate has a flange round it, onto which is fitted a cover forming a chamber divided into two side sections and a main central section by longitudinal partitions forming flow control chambers. End sections are formed by cross partitions, and all sections are divided by alternating ribs to give extended zig-zag flow paths. Holes through the end sections communicate with the hollow interiors (17a) of the upright dogs so that water can also flow through them.
