Prodn. of granular animal feeds is carried out by continuously introducing a mixt. of solid components into a granulating dish inclined at an angle of 40-60 deg o the horizontal and rotating at a speed of 10-40 r.p.m. A stream of the mixt. is supplied to the dish at ambient temp. and pressure at the same time as a stream of liq. to form porous granules having a "density ratio" (DR) of 0.60-0.95 (i.e. having 60-95% of the bulk density of the starting mixt. at an equiv. moisture content). The process is esp. useful for producing "instant" milk-substitute granules from whey powder, but can also be used to produce pig feeds from cereals and ruminant feeds from starch, etc. The granules are produced by agglomeration without compression or heating. The milk-substitute granules reconstitute rapidly in water, e.g. within 1 min. without vigorous agitation. |
