In a dental handpiece, in which the chuck 10 is operated to grip or release a tool by manually rotating an exposed member 14, an arm 17 is provided, pivoted to the handpiece and able to be moved from a position (as shown) in which a pin 19 on the arm engages a hollow shaft 6 holding the chuck and secures them against rotation, to a position (Figure 1, not shown) in which a cover plate on the-arm fits over and protects the operating member 14. The chuck 10 is fitted into the end 6a of the hollow shaft 6 so that the conically shaped fingers 10a of the chuck mate with the end of the shaft and, in use, the chuck and shaft are rotated by a spindle 11 connected to a flexible or other driving member at a point 11b. The spindle 11 is screw-threaded into the end 10b of the chuck and, with the shaft secured by the pin 19, the spindle may be rotated by the member 14, so that the chuck moves on the screw-threads into or out off engagement with the end 6a of the shaft, so that the tool is either gripped or released. The handpiece includes a felt sealing member 9 and is of metal with a covering 2 of a synthetic plastic. |
