A gas containing from 20 to 99% by volume CH 4 and substantially free of higher hydrocarbons is made by catalytically hydrocracking a petroleum product which has been desulphurized e.g. over a zinc molybdate catalyst, in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst containing 1 to 50% of one or a combination of Fe 2 O 3 , NiO, CoO, Co 2 O 3 , ThO 2 and CuO. Reaction temperatures are kept below 700‹ C., to prevent cracking of the methane, e.g. by cooling the reactor, and where a plurality of catalyst beds in series are employed, heat exchangers may be provided between the beds. Reaction pressures of 20 to 50 bars are necessary. Refractory oxide catalyst supports (Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , MgO and metals of the 2nd Group of the Periodic Table) are employed. The process allows low starting temperatures (200‹ to 250‹ C.) to be used. Oxides of Group I metals may be included in the catalyst supports. |
