[Also in Division C2] An inhalant anaesthetic composition comprises a halomethyl 1, 3-polyhalo-2-propyl ether of the formula: where X and Y each independently denotes H, F, Cl or Br and from 0 to 2 X's are H, from 0 to 2 Y's are H, at least 1 of X or Y is H, from 0 to 1 X is Br, from 0 to I Y is Br, and from 1 to 4 Y's are F, and IX is F when 2X's and 2Y's are H, in gaseous admixture with oxygen in amounts suitable to maintain anaesthesia and support respiration. The halomethyl ethers may be admixed with known anaesthetics such as nitrous oxide, ethyl ether, cyclopropane, haloethane, and ethyl vinyl ether. The halomethyl ethers may also be injected directly into the body by means of a catheter or a shunt, or may be prepared in an oil-in-water type emulsion and injected into an animal to evoke anaesthesia. |
