The generator steps up the supply voltage using an astable oscillator circuit comprising two transistors in flip-flop connection feeding a split transformer primary with the centre connected to the low voltage DC battery supply. The ends of the transformer are connected to the collectors of the astable oscillator transistors. The 500 volt output of the transformer secondary is rectified by a diode bridge, filtered by a capacitor and connected through a series thyristor to the primary of a high voltage step up transformer. The transformer has protective break devices on both primary and secondary. The gate of the thyristor is connected through a zener diode to the collector of one of the oscillator transistors so the thyristor is fired each time the transistor collector goes sufficiently positive to exceed the zener voltage.
