Dirt particles and water can creep under the sealing lips (33) of radial shaft gaskets of vehicle gears, for example when the vehicle wades through mud and bodies of water. This causes pronounced wear which impairs the seal and which can lead to damage to the gear. A strong prestress of the sealing lip (33) prevents the penetration of abrasive particles, but results in a constant increased wear. The sealing according to the invention avoids these disadvantages by means of a control device having a valve (25). The control device serves for selectively connecting the interiors of housings (29) for parts of the power transmission to a compressed-air source (16) or to a venting device (28). The pressing force of the sealing lips (33) can be increased temporarily, as required, by loading them with compressed air. <IMAGE>
