Compounds of the formula wherein A is -NHR or -NR1R11, each X is Cl or Br, R is a linear, branched or cyclic C 3-4 alkyl group or a group -(CY 2 ) n R111 where n is 1 or 2, each Y is H or CH 3 and R111 is Br, Cl, C#CH, CN, OH or C 1-4 alkoxy, R1 is a saturated or unsaturated, linear alkyl, cycloalkyl, chloroalkyl or cyanoalkyl and R11 is alkyl, chloroethyl, cyanoethyl, hydroxyethyl or cyclopropyl, are obtained by reacting a corresponding 2,6- dihaloisonicotinoyl chloride with an amine of the formula RNH 2 or R1NHR11 at a temperature below 25‹ C. in the presence of at least one molar equivalent of an acid binder and a low-boiling or a water-soluble organic solvent. Compounds of the above general formula (except those in which R is linear or branched alkyl, and/or R111 is Br, Cl, OH or alkoxy and/or R1 is linear alkyl or chloroalkyl) are novel compounds. The compounds are useful as tranquillizers.
