Title compd. (I) for prodn. of vinylchloride was produced by reaction of ethylene with Cl2 in a liq. medium comprising >=1 chlorinated 2C hydrocarbon in a zone(1) at 85-160≦̸C, a stream of I from a CH2;CHCl prod. unit contg. a little amount of CH2:CClCH;CH2 as an impurity being available for introduction (1). Prior to introduction into(1), (a) the I stream is subjected to controlled chlorination to partially chlorinate deriv. of the compd., (b) the further chlorinated deriv. is sepd. from the I, and (C) the I stream from step (b) is introduced into (I).
