The hydraulic or pneumatic piston and cylinder with a protective ring over the open end of the cylinder, sealing against the piston rod incorporates an insert to oppose the effects of eccentric loads on the unit, tending to bend the piston rod and cylinder. This insert consists of a ring of wedge shaped blocks enclosing the piston rod, fitted into a groove around the inside of the protective ring. Between the segments are inserted flat plates of plastics material. Viewed in the other direction, each block is semicircular, with a semicircular groove at the centre, and all the grooves of the ring of blocks hold a plastics ring in contact with the piston rod. This ring of blocks carries a friction reducing p+fe coating. The piston carries a high pressure seal and the protective ring incorporates a dust excluding ring.
