<p>AIR CLEANER WITH PERMANENT CARTRIDGE SEAL A heavy-duty filter assembly includes a housing which receives a removable filter cartridge and which has a closed end, an open end through which the cartridge is inserted into the housing, and a closure for the open end. The cartridge assembly includes inner and outer annular screens and end caps interconnecting the screens at the ends thereof and cooperating with the screens to define an annular compartment which houses the filtering media. The closed end of the housing is provided with a groove which is filled with an annular band of sealing material, such as urethane or rubber, and the corresponding cartridge end cap which faces the closed end of the housing is provided with a circumferentially extending projection which is adapted to penetrate the band of sealing material when the closure is installed on the housing to thereby effect a seal between the cartridge and the housing. When the cartridge is replaced, the band of sealing material remains on the closed end of the housing, and a new filter cartridge is installed which also includes an annular projection which similarly penetrates the sealing material. An alternate embodiment is disclosed in which sealing material is provided on both the closed end of the housing and on the closure member, so that a seal is effected at both ends of the cartridge. The diameters of the projections used on the opposite ends of the cartridge are unequal, so that the cartridge may be inverted to obtain a fresh sealing diameter on the sealing material.</p> |
