An electronic unit processes the detected signal to determine an instantaneous diameter as the wire passes from one reel to another. Wire (1) from a storage reel (2) passes through a pulley (6) and weight (7) system to provide a constant tension to the wire as it passes through guides (8,10) between which is mounted a luminous assembly (9) which comprises a light emitter (12) and photodetector (13). The second guide (10) vibrates in a transverse direction w.r.t. the wire. This produces an alternating displacement which passes in front of the detector. The time of blanking of the detector is determined in an electronic assembly and is used to determine the wire diameter.
