For the purpose of cooling a batch of a reaction mixture, e.g. fresh sludge of a sewage plant, the process employs a medium stored in two reservoirs (8, 11) and an additional reservoir (12). The medium of the first reservoir (8) is heated in the process to a first temperature, and the medium of the second reservoir (11) is heated to a second, lower temperature. The medium stored in these reservoirs (8, 11) is then utilised in heating a subsequent batch which may follow some considerable time after the previous one. During heating, the tanks (8, 11) are used in the reverse order. Therefore, the less hot medium from the reservoir (11) is used first, followed by the warmer medium from the reservoir (8). Heating of the batch is completed by delivering medium from the heatable additional reservoir (12) through the heat exchanger (3). The appliance has only one heat exchanger (3) which can be designed to be relatively small. The reaction mixture is circulated by the pump (2) in a circuit which consists of the reactor (1), the pump (2) and the heat exchanger (3). Analogously, the medium is also circulated by a pump (5) from a selected reservoir (8, 11, 12) to the heat exchanger (3) and back to the reservoir, valves (6, 7, 9, 10) being employed to select the reservoir required. <IMAGE>
