In a process for preparing a backing layer for a pressure sensitive recording material by dispersing an oil contg. colour former in an aq. soln. of CMC and a "cross conjugation former" which increases the strength of the coating, adding an aq. soln. contg. aluminium ions to the CMC soln. with stirring, to precipitate the CMC with the oil-solour former soln., coating the reverse side of a pressure sensitive recording material with the compsn. and drying, the CMC has a degree of substitution of 0.7-0.8 and a viscosity (6% aq. soln. of 500-1000 centipise. Consistent, homogeneous coating suspensions with good cheological properties for coating onto paper can be prepd. The compsn. has an ideal particle size and narrow particle size distribution. There are no changes in the coating compsn. as in prior art e.g. in mol. wt., moisture content or polymerisation degree of the CMC and there is no reduction in colour intensity of the paper with storage. |
