Low pressure polymn of alpha-olefins - using alkyl derivs or metal hydrides with titanium trichloride catalysts

The polymerisation of alpha-olefins, is catalysed by a system including an alkyl halide, an alkyl deriv. or hydride of a gp. I-III metal, and the prod. of the reaction between Ticl4 and a transition metal carbonyl cpd. on a base of large specific area. Chloro-cpds. of Ti are highly reactive catalysts for these reactions, enabling polymerisation of alpha-olefins to take place at low press. Because the catalyst has a large specific area, pre-treatment with e.g. a Grignard reagent of Al alkyl cpd. is inessential.
