A method and apparatus for preventing a sag of a panel (2), in which a skeleton (7) as well as a plate (6a) to be attached thereto are placed on a tentative placing rest (3), a radiation heating device (5) furnished with heating elements (12) downwards and installed on a holding truck (4) is moved to a position over the plate (6a), the plate (6a) is preheated to a predetermined temperature by the heating elements (12) so as to thermally expand it, the radiation heating device (5) is moved away from the position over the plate (6a), the plate (6a) is quickly tacked and welded to the skeleton (7), and a tensile residual stress is developed in the plate owing to a thermal shrinkage deformation attendant upon cooling of the plate.
