The invention relates to a precision positioning machine. This is a machine with a toothed transmission belt driven by a stepping motor. It has a system for the automatic compensation of error in the pitch of the toothed belt which functions in the following way: whenever the machine is started up, a carriage is moved between two limit stops, the number of steps N taken by the motor to cover the known distance D between these stops being counted. Subsequently, whenever the carriage has to cover a distance d, the movement of the stepping motor is commanded over a number of steps equal to the distance d multiplied by the number N of steps and divided by the distance D (the calculated figure being rounded to a whole number of steps). The invention is used in drawing machines, wiring machines, etc.
