Herbicidal phenoxypyridine compounds of the formula
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="23" wi="68" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>wherein each of A and B is hydrogen, halogen, or CF<Sub>2</Sub>H-, CF<Sub>2</Sub>CI-, or CF<Sub>3</Sub>, provided that at least one of A and B is halogenomethyl, C is carboxyl or a functional derivative thereof, or halogen or OR<Sup>1</Sup>, SR<Sup>1</Sup>, or-NR<Sup>1</Sup>R<Sub>2</Sub> wherein R<Sup>1</Sup> is C<Sub>3</Sub>-C<Sub>12</Sub> alkenyl, C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>12</Sub> alkyl, or C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>12</Sub> alkyl substituted by one or more of the following: phenyl; carboxyl or a functional derivative thereof; alkoxy, alkylthio, or mono- or dialkylamino, R<Sup>2</Sup> is hydrogen, C<Sub>3</Sub>-C<Sub>12</Sub> alkenyl, C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>12</Sub> alkyl or C<Sub>2</Sub>-C<Sub>6</Sub> alkylcarbonyl; and D is hydrogen, halogen, nitro or cyano provided that when A is CF<Sub>3</Sub>, B is chlorine, and D is halogen, nitro, or cyano, C is not (a), a C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>4</Sub> alkoxy group, a-; COOR<Sup>7</Sup> group wherein R is hydrogen, a cation, or a C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>4</Sub> alkyl group; or (b) an CH<Sub>3</Sub> -OCHCO<Sub>OR</Sub>' group wherein R<Sup>7</Sup> is hydrogen, a cation, or a C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>4</Sub> alkyl group.
