This invention relates to a high voltage switch unit with a compact arrangement of actuating mechanism and contacts. A uni-directional operating handle (not shown) engages an operating boss 12 to rotate a shaft 24, thus rotating a plate 40 to actuate a linkage 54, 59, 60. An over-centre mechanism enables a spring 45 to complete the movement firmly, independently of the shaft 24. Main contacts 3, 5 are thus connected or disconnected quickly and positively. Earthing contacts 2, 4 are operated by a like mechanism. Each female contact 2, 3 is in the form of a hollow cylinder with petals 16, surrounded by a garter spring 20. The movable contact 5 is frictionally engaged by a pair of side plates 21, between which the contact 5 slides, to ensure effective passage of electric current from the respective bus 10 to the contact.
