A nuclear reactor has a system for preventing undesired ejection of a control rod during shut-down or scram opera-rion. The system includes a device for slowing down a control rod drive piston if the drive arrangemint ruptures. The device shuts off fluid flow from the reactor vessel(12) to an enclosure which surrounds a screw drive(14) and normally allows movement of the piston(24). Flow is controlled by a ball valve assembly(22).
