The printing head for a thermal printer is completely fabricated using integrated circuit techniques to form nickel chrome heating resistors with integral Schottky diodes. To provide multiplexed addressing to heat the nominated resistor, the resistances are arranged so there are N sets each comprising P resistances which accept a common supply (4A,4B,...,4N) at one end and having the other end of each resistor connected to the anode of a Schottky diode (6AA,...,6NP) fabricated directly on the substrate. The cathodes of diodes having the same position in the N sets of P parallel resistors (for example 6AB, 6BB,...6NB) are connected together on the substrate and the common connections linked to a separate input connection (e.g. 10B for diodes occupying row B in each set). A resistor is selected by applying signals to the common resistor terminal required (4A-4N) and to the cathode link (10A- 10N) terminal.
|
