1418612 Phosphorus oxychloride crosslinked starch granules A E STALEY MFG CO 7 Jan 1974 [1 March 1973] 00616/74 Heading C3U A phosphorus oxychloride cross-linked cereal starch in granule form and having a pasting temperature at least 20‹ F. higher than the pasting temperature of the starch prior to cross-linking preferably of granule size 12-40 microns and having the pasting temperature raised from 138‹ to 162‹ F. may be obtained by preparing a suspension of granular cereal starch in water at below 95‹ F., adding sodium hydroxide in an amount sufficient to obtain a pH of 11À5-11À7, adding a minor amount of phosphorus oxychloride to the suspension to initiate crosslinking of the starch, allowing the crosslinking to continue for a short first period, readjusting the pH to 11À5 to 11À9 with sodium hydroxide and then simultaneously but separately adding phosphorus oxychloride and sodium hydroxide in amounts to maintain the pH at 11À5-11À7 and permitting the crosslinking reaction to continue for a second longer period at below 90‹ F. to obtain the desired product. |
