PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device which is capable of efficiently utilizing the incident light from a light source and obviates the deteriorating of the optical characteristics of a circular polarization layer in production stag by adopting a constitution to repeat reflection between the circular polarization layer and the reflection plate of a surface light source device. SOLUTION: The light transmitted through the prism lenses 9b of a condenser sheet 9 is made into parallel light beams which advance into a liquid crystal display element 1a and transmit a glass supporting substrate. The transmitted light beams propagate in the circular polarization layer 8. The right circularity polarized light reflected by failing to transmit the circular polarization layer 8 is fed back top the surface light source device 14 if the circularity polarized light that, for example, the circular polarization layer 8 allows the transmission is assumed to be the right- handed circularity polarized light (light circularity polarized light). The right circularity polarized light is diffused by a light diffusion sheet 10, is then reflected by a reflection plate 12 and is made incident again on the circular polarization layer 8 of the liquid crystal display element 1. The reflection is repeated between the reflection plate 12 and circular polarization later 8 of the surface light source device 14 in such a manner, by which the transmission of almost all the right circularity polarized light through the circular polarization layer 8 is made possible. |
