The shears consist of a housing with a slot in which a cable or other workpiece can be clamped by a threaded bolt rotated by a tommy-bar; and a moving shear knife (8) is driven through the cable by a row of explosives including an explosive washer (11) and a starter cartridge (14). The washer (11) consists of an explosive disc surrounded by a polymer ring. A consumable ring (16) is pref. used to start a longitudinal explosive wave. The explosive in the washer is not attacked by water, and contains min. 60% PETN; and cartridge (14) pref. contains a sealed electric detonator contg. several explosives including PETN.
