Polyethylene wax prodn. is carried out by polymerisation in a solvent mixt. of an aromatic hydrocarbon and a solvent with OH gps. at 50-100 degrees C. and 0.7-350 bar excess pressure, using a catalyst consisting of (a) a Ni(O) cpd. and (b) a (Schoenberg) adduct and/or mixt. of a quinoid cpd and a tert. phosphine. Linear (highly crystalline) hard waxes with little or no liquid fraction are obtd. at relatively low temp. They generally have a m.pt. of 100-130 degrees C. and density of 0.94-0.96 g/cm3 and are useful in floor polishes, high gloss waxes (car polishes), printing inks, paper coating compsns and hot melt adhesive.
