Resorcylic acid lactone compounds of the formula: wherein -A- is either -CH2-CH2- or -CH=CH; >Z is either >CH2, >C=0 or >CH-OH; and R and R1 are either H or a C3 group selected from propyl and -CH2CH=CH2, and are different from each other. Such compounds and their derivatives are provided as growth promoting agents for animals, e.g. ruminants and poultry.
