The unit comprises at least one channel 11 along which water flows and containing a plurality of energy extracting devices 14 projecting into the water. Such devices can be paddles of water wheels or similar paddles mounted on an endless belt. The channel 11 co-operates with a return channel 12, the two channels being one above the other or side-by-side with a pump 15 circulating the water round the loop formed by the channels. The channel or channels can be serpentine so that the energy extracting devices can have common shafts. <IMAGE>
