Bitumen-polymer compsns. are made by mixing bitumen with a polymer soln. obtd. by stirring a butadiene-styrene copolymer at 120-180 degrees C with a mainly aromatic heavy cut obtd. from the cracking of petroleum, then adding 0.2-2% S whilst stirring in the same temp. range. Homogeneous S-vulcanised bitumen-polymer compsns. are obtd. with much shorter mixing times (1 hr.) than previously. The prods. are useful e.g. in road making and have excellent durability and mechanical properties.
