PURPOSE:To estimate the life and wear of tools on the basis of the renewal state of the maximum value of natural vibration energy of tools by measuring the vibration generated by the relative motion between a cutting tool and a work by means of a vibration detector. CONSTITUTION:A tool shank 2 provided with a cutting tip for lathe is affixed to a tool holder 1 by means of fixing screws 4. An accelerometer 5 is attached to the shank 2. Energy of a certain frequency relative to the wear of a tip 3 is shown in the appended diagram. The wear of the tip 3 is indicated by the worn width of the flank. In the diagram, the variation of the energy of a specific frequency with the increase in the wear of the tip is divided in three ranges as designated by A, B and C. In the range A no wear is recognized, in the range B, the sharpness of the tip is reduced and cutting resistance is increasing, while in the range C multiple combined vibrations are occurring and the tip is subject to damage. |
