High-speed prodn. of webs of yarn - for cross-laying, reinforcement of paper, textiles etc.

High speed prodn. of a web of weft which may be cross-laid with warp yarns, is carried out with a view to reinforcing paper, textiles or plastic materials. The machine producing the weft yarn web comprises a rotary creel feeding the weft in spirals from yarn bobbins mounted on plates. A distribution element has guides which may distribute a large number of yarns at high speed to form a layer of weft yarns, deposited not from the selvedges of a flat sheet, but on the periphery of a tube. The weft sheet may later be combined with a web of warp yarns, and with softened or sticky joining elements to hold the yarns in position. The machine is capable of forming a layer of weft yarns at very high speeds, e.g. twelve to twenty metres per minute, handling 300 to 500 yarns per metre. A width of fabric of five metres presents no difficulty, which is a great improvement on known methods. It thus provides a web much reduced in price, suitable for e.g. cheap soil clothing, wide paper and bitumenised waterproofing.
