PROCESSES FOR THE PREPARATION OF LACTONEDIOL DERIVATIVES

The preparation of certain racemic or optically active lactone diol derivatives is disclosed which derivatives are useful as itermediates in prostaglandin syntheses. These compounds may be represented by the structural formula I (I) wherein R1 stands for acyl, hydrocarbon optionally containing also oxygen in the chain, or silyl. Alternative processes for the preparation of the compounds of the general formula I are disclosed.
