The electric fence energiser has a capacitor (4) connected across a power supply (20, 21) to an output transformer (6). A silicon controlled rectifier (5) is provided between capacitor (4) and the primary winding (22) of transformer (6). A controllable switch (2) is provided with control circuit (8) for controlling the charge in capacitor (4) via switch (2). Circuit (8) also triggers rectifier (5). Switch (2) may comprise a triac, transistor, silicon controlled rectifier or a solid state relay.
