The optical display is used to comprise an alpha-numeric sequence comprising at least two characters. The full sequence is split into sequentially displayed groups, with the display also allowing additional characters such as slots, commas or dashes to be displayed, so that the division points between the sequence groups and the end of the full sequence etc. can be indicated. Pref. a telephone number can be displayed separately as an area code, followed by the subscriber number, with an additional character displayed together with one of them but not the other.
