The face side (15) of the gypsum plasterboard (5), which has been cut to its definitive length, is provided with a coating which, when dried, forms a film which is continuous but is permeable to water vapour. The coating is a lacquer, e.g. an aqueous polymer dispersion, and it is applied onto the face side of the still-moist gypsum plasterboard and is dried, with the gypsum plasterboard, in a drier. As a result, the physical and chemical properties of the face paper can be improved considerably, without the drying process of the gypsum plasterboard being impaired to any great extent. <IMAGE>
