For the identification of metallic articles, such as pipes, while simultaneously ensuring effective corrosion protection, a two-layer coating is proposed, in a first process step a first thermoplastic coating being applied onto the metallic articles, the stabilisation of the layer thickness provided by which coating ensures the desired corrosion protection. This first layer is moreover coloured black, by means of which the stability of the coating can be improved. The second coating, representing the colour-identification layer or the colour marking, can be coloured in any manner, no consideration needing to be made regarding the possible decomposition of the colourants in light, since this layer no longer contributes to the corrosion protection. Furthermore, the layer thickness of the second layer can be chosen just sufficiently thin for the desired colour impression to result.
