PURPOSE:To efficiently remove carbon by impressing the first high voltage and, immediately before combustion, the second high voltage is impressed on the ignition plugs. CONSTITUTION:On the suction stroke of a piston 14, a suction valve 16 opens so that air-fuel mixture is introduced into a combustion chamber 11 through a suction port 15. When compression has come in the vicinity of 45 deg. with upper dead point on the compression stroke of the piston 14, high voltage is generated by a high- voltage generator 40 and impressed on ignition plugs 20 via a distributor 50 so that spark is generated between the central electrode 21 and earth electrode 22 of the plugs 20. When the breakdown resistance between the electrodes 21 and 22 has lowered to a fixed value due to the attachement of carbon to the surface of the leg portion of an insulator 24, high voltage is impressed by a high-voltage generator 30 via the distributor 50 so that carbon is changed into carbon dioxide and removed. |
