The drive selector is for use on vehicles which have to traverse rough country as well as roads. To prevent selection of locked differential drive, operative on all axles, at a dangerously high speed electrical interlocks are provided which block execution of the selection instruction unless the road speed is sufficiently low and four wheel drive has already been selected. Low road speed is recognised through the gear ratio selected, and electrical switches in the interlock circuit only those in low forward or reverse gear. A further safety feature incorporated is an idle/drive selector which puts the main gearbox out of mesh in the idle position. This feature is typically interconnected with an auxiliary power take off or auxiliary equipment drives. It may also be interlocked with an auxiliary engine start switch outside the driving cab. Operation of all these circuits is locked out when the drive is selected.
