Detergent alkylate is obtained by thermally decomposing a C5-C8 alkane sulphonic acid obtained from a paraffin fraction having a n-paraffin content of at least 95% to form a C5-C8 n-olefine, dimerizing the olefine to a C10-C16 product and alkylating an aromatic hydrocarbon with the C10-C16 olefine. The sulphonic acid is preferably obtained by sulphoxidation of a n-paraffin obtained by urea adduction or molecular sieve separation and the acid is decomposed as described in Specification 1,022,959. Dimerization is effected over a transition metal oxide on silica-alumina, a cracking catalyst or a Ziegler catalyst. The desired dimer fraction is separated by distillation and used to alkylate benzene in the presence of hydrogen fluoride.
