The luminophore grains are coated with a pigment(I) suiting the colour emitted by the luminophore; and the grains are then milled either dry or in an aq. soln. for size redn.. The luminophore is next heated at 200-1000 degrees C., pref. 400-950 degrees C., and esp. 500-800 degrees C., before use. Prior to heating, the luminophore is pref. subjected to alkaline oxidn.. The pref. luminophore is a red emitter, esp. a rare earth luminophore, coated with CdSSe (I) or with iron oxide (I); or a blue luminophore coated with cobalt aluminate. The heating pref. occurs in either air or an inert atmos. for 10-200 minutes, esp. 1/2-1 hour.
